Claas Relotius received journalism awards and got past fact checkers of the most important German press by selectively inventing facts that powerfully confirmed the world view of his audience. A journalist is expected to selectively *collect* these facts, not to invent them.

So is your point that for a journalist who tries to operate the confirmation bias of its audience, the difference between inventing insignificant details and filtering facts is not that big? I tend to agree.
