I've been thinking... what is self awareness? People use the phrase, and I kind of get what they mean, but what is it really? Is it awareness of the self? It seems to be that when people say self-aware, that's not exactly what they mean.

It means that you track what you are actually doing, and understand why you are doing it. (It’s a separate skill from being able to rationalize your actions. The difference manifests in your ability to control your behavior to do whatever you want.)

That's deep. I think when most people use the phrase, they mean "you're not aware of how I see you", meaning "you're being annoying and don't realize it". Which doesn't have to do with awareness of the self, but of others perceptions of one's self.

Does self awareness as you define it have a cost? Does your brain have to perform some sort of extra processing in order to be aware of the self? Why isn't self awareness automatic and always on?

There is no magical way by which something reveals its own nature to itself. You need to form the correct models first, and that’s a hard learning problem.

I have a hunch that it's not a one time thing. Like, you can't become aware of yourself and then stay aware. I imagine it would take a constant process to maintain it.

It is not different from building awareness for your posture, or for the way you walk. You don’t need to pay constant attention once the model is in place.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what a self even is. It's an identity, is it? It must be a different thing from ones identity.

Your identity is a fiction. Self awareness usually requires deconstructing your identity.

There are variables in my mind that govern how I make decisions, and they are very hard to overwrite by thinking. I would guess that the set of those variables(constants?) is what makes the self.

Identifications measure the parameters of the world not absolutely but relative to an arbitrary target value. If you can choose that target value (or turn it off), you begin to have agency.
