I'd argue that the majority of women favor brands for the same reason, although their may be a more complicated decision pattern bc of the variety of socially necessary considerations, it really does come down to the best tool for the job

Yes, men are expected to dress generically unless they explicitly want to make a statement (usually to the effect that they are gay, or care more about appearance than getting things done). The same is reflected in haircuts.
