I tend to be opposed to heavy handed filtering of social media for fear of opinion manipulation, but whenever I dip my toe outside of my carefully curated bubble (say, with a search for comments on Ocasio-Cortez) I lose faith in human civility.

I somewhat disagree. It's not that verbal violence gets more attention, it's that when people don't listen to you, you are compelled to turn up your volume, and make your point louder and more intense.
