My son is 13 and has autism. He in nonverbal, needs to still be fed most foods due to tremors, and is still in diapers. I’m not sure what term to use to describe him when people ask about his level of autism other than low functioning.

The difficulty seems to arise not because of language, but because of concepts. If people live in a subjective universe where people are high value or low value, they have difficulty to understand that by saying "low functioning", you are indeed pointing at function, not value.
