I thought the idea of the holographic universe comes down to the information content of the black hole approximating the information content of a surface, not a volume. Why would anything have to come out of the black hole if you think that?
These are both aspects of treating black holes as thermodynamic systems. These objects have entropy and non-zero temperature, which suggests they have microscopic degrees of freedom, whose dynamics is generally thought to be time-reversible, requiring information to be preserved.
As far as I understand, the spatial description holds only as you squint (and you have to squint a bit differently for the thermodynamic one). The event horizon means that information rarely finds a path, but sometimes it does, and we get Hawking radiation?
