Look at self driving cars not from the perspective of the [individual] car but from the [entire] road. Don't imitate local human behavior. Turn the entire traffic into an intelligent system, and integrate human drivers top down into the global flow instead of the other way around
If we would switch to autonomous cars now, we would probably have fewer casualties than the ones caused by human drivers. And our legal systems are reluctant in changing the status quo.

You are correct. While autonomous cars have logged fewer accidents per mile of driving than humans, the conditions are not comparable, so my statement was conjecture and possibly hyperbole.
