I notice themes across ideas across time. But I only become less convinced in general that we have anything like deep knowledge about the nature of reality.

We cannot know the nature of reality, we can only find the shortest model among those that best explain the observations (Solomonoff). It may well be that existence is the default, that only finite automata can exist, and the universe is the superposition of all finite automata.
