I am skeptical of consensus opinions on any complex subject, because such a consensus is usually not the result of all the experts independently reaching the same conclusion, but of consensus building forces. The application of force will distort what's considered to be true.
There is always a ground truth, and any process that gets influenced by anything but the search for truth is less likely to find it. A consensus is usually influenced by politics.

When values are involved, it’s no longer about truth, it’s about what is considered most important. Good consensus-reaching methods are the ones that get the relative weights right based on having the most appropriate parties involved to contribute them.
