Interesting thought. What if it's just an emergent property of the way maths is structured? With great teachers perhaps we would be further along the path to connecting seemingly unrelated branches?

In Germany, failing math students will usually become math teachers. I always thought that to be a disastrous accident of the German system, but mathematicians are very smart, so perhaps they want to have mean bouncers in front of their club?

What if the teachers and schools are making it unattractive to all but the mediocre students, and mathematics is actually mostly being retarded from developing into something far superior than the complex and mostly incomprehensible thing it has been so far?
