What if the tremendous success and conceptual cohesion of the unified code base of mathematics is largely the result of bad math teachers making the field unattractive to all but the smartest and most tenacious students?

why would bad teaching select for smarter students, specifically?

It means that almost everybody who makes it into academia is self-taught.

Interesting thought. What if it's just an emergent property of the way maths is structured? With great teachers perhaps we would be further along the path to connecting seemingly unrelated branches?

Most difficult problems don't progress faster if you add more people of average ability to your team. There are no LOC metrics in mathematics.

Hmm, from my experience this is very probable. How inadvertent though is the next question...

In Germany, failing math students will usually become math teachers. I always thought that to be a disastrous accident of the German system, but mathematicians are very smart, so perhaps they want to have mean bouncers in front of their club?

What if the teachers and schools are making it unattractive to all but the mediocre students, and mathematics is actually mostly being retarded from developing into something far superior than the complex and mostly incomprehensible thing it has been so far?
