The food seeking, sucking and swallowing behavior of newborns is entirely governed by reflexes. These reflexes stop as soon as the baby understands how to eat. I suspect that moral emotions are reflexes, too: they control our social behavior until we have real understanding.

So, you would rather argue it’s like the “empty tank” notification in a car? Well, still, how would reason tell you that you should react accordingly? It only tells you if you don’t react at all you will die. It doesn’t ultimately tell you why it would be bad if you were dying.
