Seriously, have a look at this. https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=nips,nipples … And if you look at the queries to see the context, it seems to be about a candy brand. The first query that may relate to nipples is "what are nips" which suggests that the term is actually quite unusual.

However, I am not a native English speaker, and it may well be that everyone around me hides their embarrassing slang words from me (and Google trends). So please let me know, do you use the word?

I know of several such people.

(And I say so with regret...but remember I went to college with many who became fighter pilots, and now I live on the beach where surfer dude culture has its presence.)

Joscha, as a medic, I should probably tell you that nipples are present in both, male and female anatomies, and in equal quantities. That's what we in medicine commonly refer to as "gender equality". ;)

Seriously though, people might be offended by the overall feeling of "inappropriatedness" of pronouncing the names of intimate body parts in higly academic societies, not by a real sex offense. Same as why people dress up, while being naked is the "default" state biologically.

I'm firmly Swiss in the renaming debate but "nips" is 100% a vulgar word used for nipples. It's quite immature but the first time I heard of the conference I was extremely confused and embarrassed.

more curiously is i'm not sure why women specifically are affected -- men have nipples too!

i haven't seen someone other than me use "nips" to mean nipples, and i only use because it's unusual & sounds funny..
