While I can reliably know that I am not a genius, I can never fully be sure that I am not an idiot.
There are people with a tight mind: everything they allow themselves to believe is solidly proven. They tend to be narrow and literal. There dreamers with a very open mind: improbably things are still very possible and invite inferences. Geniuses tend to be able to combine this.

I know a number of people that work extraordinarily hard for extended periods of time, but they won't ever amount to much, because all their work is lacking and does barely improve. And there are geniuses that rapidly update with every stroke towards perfection.

Hmmm. My experience is very different. Perhaps the Sincerity ingredient was missing in the people to which you refer? Or lack of information? Or disordered character structure? Or isolation from helpful friends, peers, mentors or role models? Or just pretending to work?
