For me, ethics is the principled negotiation of conflicts of interest with those that you decide you share purposes with (such as not wanting them to suffer). Ethics is entirely rational decision making software for dealing with the long game. Children have to build their own.

Take a few steps back, in space AND time, Joscha. Away from all parochial gangland program. Ethics WOULD have been having a GLOBAL perspective; honoring, understanding, knowing and protecting (stewarding) our former Biosphere, of which our Human health, wealth, sanity was a part.
