Our current reliability based software paradigm lavishly squanders the determinism we so meticulously extract from physics. Conversely, our brain is a best-effort computer, and works whenever the substrate is sufficiently better than random.

Actually, we do not know what mechanisms “create” brain’s effectivity comparing to those you mentioned above, don't we? But they are “physical “ too.

What if brain’s very high performance relates to its specific ability to selectively analyze information flow? Computational principles don’t differ from machines (i.e. neuronal firing x inputs/ outputs), but are somewhat modified on multiple levels. How are they modified?
