Have you read 'A Fire Upon the Deep'? Centerpoint of the plot is a species in which packs of 3-4 are the smallest/dominant "unit of civilization" and have human-level intelligence while individual members don't.

Yes, and it is a beautiful concept, enabled by an innate ultrasonic brain link. If you link human brains via social protocols, they introduce constraints on their mental agency to improve convergence, which tends to make them stupid. (we are transgenerationally cumulative though)

For now. You could say that a unsupervised character level conditional variational autoencoder fed by multiple points of view would output thought vectors representing the average view of the "we".

To be fair, there are intimate modes of thinking together, where each individual acts as if it was a voice in the same mind, and they dance together, not against each other. But there is a limit to how much mutual coherence can be achieved without lying

Yes, WE can. We complement our facts, we have complementary inference patterns, and we can reach different conclusions. Your tweet is an input to my thinking, my reply will (slightly) change the way you think about the problem. Even if we disagree, we are thinking together.

That is you and me thinking, not "we". It works because each of us privileges local consistency over mutual convergence.

I wonder whether “we” can think. We have had sci-fi where a collective thinks. We have had pairs thinking together, we have had triples thinking together, we have had quadruples thinking together. The question though is whether fiction can become reality one day.
