But it's people inside the ideology who are supposed to be identifying their worst / least convincing ideas so as to promote them; what I'm saying is they prob can't identify those, but they can certainly identify their most distinctive

Do you think that having an ideology is incompatible with having sound epistemology?

No, of course not

In that case, it should be totally possible for an adherent of an ideology to recognize which ideas are mere totems and which are intrinsically sound.

I have been to the place of utter disbelief often enough to recognize that believe should not be a verb, i.e. every relationship between believer and belief is fishy. But in my human mode I can give you a long list. For starters, my children look better than yours. :)

The problems arise when a moral cause is argued to be conditional on particular facts. If an outsider disputes the facts, the believer usually assumes that one must also dismiss the cause, hence disputing the facts is not allowed. This may lead people to begin opposing the cause.

That's certainly something that can happen, but I don't see that it's a general rule

(And of course a given view of the facts is often relevant to deciding what the moral response should be. People sometimes think they're arguing about principles when actually they're arguing about the facts)

It seems to me that eg Damore or Summers thought they were arguing about facts while most of their opponents thought they were arguing about the moral principles

Yes, it can be either way around; or lots of other permutations
