Ethics is not about being "good" or "politically correct". Ethics is about modeling the consequences of our actions beyond the immediate context.

I can’t think of another way that would yield a better result, so long as utilitarianism is the goal of each action. Unless utilitarianism is not the goal? I dunno

Once you have write access to the reward function, it becomes very difficult to talk about ethics. So we probably have to commit to some general aesthetics in our models.
