If only Chernobyl and Fukushima were still habitable. What is wrong with solar thermal? No fancy resources or tech required, no uranium mining, no pollution. We are not going to run out of uninhabitable deserts any time soon.

If you are referring to a facility such as Ivanpah then the discussion goes to the 173,000+ heliostats that cover 4000+ acres for approx. 377 MW requiring nat gas to start up. Steam generators which could quite be the most expensive way to boil water. (approx. 28% eff)

So yes I agree Ivanpah may have a smaller amount of heavy metals then standard solar panel designs due to the heliostats. However, with no storage and requiring natural gas to start up, it is still dependent on fossil fuels. Hence its location near the major north-south pipeline
