If only Chernobyl and Fukushima were still habitable. What is wrong with solar thermal? No fancy resources or tech required, no uranium mining, no pollution. We are not going to run out of uninhabitable deserts any time soon.

Yep. Even if every nuclear power plant were to end its life in a meltdown, nuclear power would still be far less harmful than fossil fuels per unit of energy delivered. Not so much because fossil fuels are so dirty, but because meltdowns are so clean. https://mobile.twitter.com/jrmygrdn/status/1050795683937173509 …

What??? Solar, wind and batteries have magically solved their rare earth metal needs without requiring anymore mining? Must have missed that scientific breakthrough. I must have also missed where those same rare earth metals are recovered using environmentally friendly tech

Solar thermal does not need rare earths

I've worked in Uranium mining for 20+ years, a close relative worked for Dr, Geno Saccomanno who dev'd the sputum test for cancer in uranium miners. 1950's era miners/smokers had a 90% mortality rate, with modern ventilation none die. Society improves, (See:mandated seat-belts)

Please educate us on the risks of uranium mining. Nuclear plants need so little of it, so any enviro stress would be tiny anyway. Please prove us wrong.

The effects of uranium mining especially in Niger and Namibia are quite disastrous. Historically, mining in the US and Germany has led to increases in lung cancer and other carcinoma, with prevalence increased in some areas even today.https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2008/dec/05/nuclear-greenpolitics …

There is no need to ignore uranium mining and accidents. They happen. They are still a small problem compared to other forms of electricity production. More people die installing solar panels and building wind turbines, and they need their metal parts and concrete too. Lots of.

Both Fukushima and Chernobyl were freak accidents. Fukushima in fact was a plant with many redundant backup systems which by chance were all knocked out at the same time. Chernobyl was the result of poor management and unwillingness to tackle the actual problem.
