Stoicism is a state in which you only regulate what is out of balance, and only identify with balances you can regulate. It seems optimal for single individuals, but I would expect that it should be disadvantaged by evolution for species that form cooperative groups.

For an individual, it makes sense to produce exactly as much as it needs. For a group, it makes sense if individuals feel always discontent and compelled to do more than they individually need, so there is more stuff to go around.

Ah, that does make sense! I’m sure stoicism does accommodate this to some degree, otherwise it would stifle innovation and it seems too obvious of a problem to have been overlooked by them
