We create a model of ourself that’s analogous to our model of other people and then eventually start conflating the experiential self with the modeled self.

We tend to form our model of self and others simultaneously, and only gradually take them apart to understand that others have different goals, beliefs, values and even mental architecture. It is the difference between self and other that is hard to learn, not the similarity.
