Motivational states are pre-conscious. The reward system is outside of conscious attention, to insulate it from reward maximizing or punishment minimizing updates to the reward function by attentional learning.

As well as most of emotional system as a whole. Emotional system may be "dumber" that conciousness, but most often, it's the one that controls the other.

Agreed. I may not have written it the best way: your emotions are more powerful than you. But that doesn't mean that you can't be in control: a horse is also much more physically powerful than a human being. You need to trick, to accept, to pivot. Raw power won't work.

Yes, it is not so much about a human against a horse than it is like a cart against a horse, where the horse pulls the cart but the cart has an intrinsic (logical) structure can make it resist and change the direction of the horse.
