why would the model most readily available, the brain, not be used for machine learning ? fear ? or some other neurochemical imbalance, the verboten subject ? I vote the

It could be that the brain is only the best solution if you are stuck with probabilistically binary firing cells, no random access and very expensive wiring, and you want to generalize what it does

At least it helps developing AI hardware. Look at Nvidia RTX. We now get large markets for AI hardware. Even though no AGI might come directly out of it, it enables to put more resources in development of AI hardware and some not pure ML stuff might come out of it at some point.

A bit of both, but to pick one I'd say helpful. Accesibility creates interest and that lands on more researchers working on the field, which ends up with more outliers looking for new answers to the same questions. There will always be misleading resources for any topic anyways.
