Fascism and social media mobs are very different, but teach us the same thing: many, perhaps most people are not intrinsically compassionate, kind and just. When they are incentivized to behave well, they behave, and when they see a benefit in harming others, they harm.
Troubles often arise when a group believes that it wins more by adversity against other groups than by cooperation. People are then usually able to make themselves believe whatever they think is in their best interest to believe.

Compassion is programmable (as in believe) as is in group/out group as is human/whatever. IMHO most ppl don't program around there (so who does) && with groups >150 the error correction (empathy, communication, psychopath detection) fails.
