This is sort of what Nick Bostrom says right? To ask it what we should ask it if we had a better sense of what was going on

If we had a better sense of what was going on, we would ask the AI to shut us down.

if we've learned anything from the Twilight Zone, it's that this plan cannot end well for humanity

Humanity must end at some point; isn’t this one of the better endings?

The goal of the universe/life/evolution/entropy seems to be to divide the simple, boring stuff that exists in half, and recombine the halves with their closest neighbors to form new, more complex, fun things. AI will understand this and work with life, and help humanity evolve.
-
Why would you think any of this? It is not logical.

That objective would keep humans static and would end evolution. Perhaps a better objective is the old golden rule 'treat us as you would wish to be treated yourself'?
-
No, the rule is "treat THEM as you want to be treated yourself", but it opens up the difficulty to define the degree of themness.

It's kind of funny seeing SF from 40 years ago becoming current (Lemme see if I can find that book). Frank Herberts Dune put it into the prestory, not many ppl get it.

I’m just hoping that it (the AI) sorts the jerks from the rest of us!
