NYU psychologist Catherine Hartley, at the MSR-NYU RL day, says that children are model free, while adults are model based (I'm simplifying). Fascinating.

Terry Gilliam's "Tideland" explores this idea (putting a little girl through a set of experiences that are horrible to the adult audience but leave the child unfazed). Children have models, of course, but they are less cohesive, have fewer layers, and are much more lightly held.
