Beware of people that harbor self hatred. They tend to hate others even more, and are willing to act against their own interests. They cannot accept love from others (they will see it as erroneous), and will often enter into abusive relationships.

A lot of hatred and pain is fueled by self hatred. If you teach people that they are worth less than others, and to experience guilt over their identity, upbringing, skin color, gender, sexual orientation or other traits they did not choose, you'll make the world worse.

What about teaching people to feel guilt about inborn inclinations to desires that should rightly be suppressed? For example destructive and sadistic desires?

Perhaps guilt would paradoxically make them more likely to engage in those behaviors. But that raises the question, if guilt is such an ineffective way for us to downregulate a behavior, why is it so pervasive?

The purpose of guilt is to change one's behavior and attitudes to avoid ostracism after a transgression. This mechanism requires that guilt can only be forgiven by others. Guilt does not affect the individual's needs but their norms.

Yes, but my point is it seems like there are cases where guilt could productively be applied to people for traits they did not choose, such as innate destructive desires. And if there are no such cases then why are people so fond of deploying such a counterproductive mechanism?

Oh, I see it now. You are right! Indoctrinating people with norms that produce guilt when violated, even if the individual did not choose to have the traits that make it prone to violate them (like pedophilia) can be net beneficial.
