Airtight and solid presentation by Joscha Bach @Plinz https://slideslive.com/38909848/consciousness-in-humans-and-other-machines … . Should be a mandatory introduction for anyone exploring AGI.

Thank you, but let me point out that this presentation is quite speculative. I try to make my case as solid as possible, but my arguments are not formal enough to prove them.

Very interesting. Get the sense that your definition of computing seems to be broader - as in every system (including universe) computes its time evolution function. Is that right?

Any system that can be described in a constructive language is computational.

That would make 'computation' a property we imbue on a system by being able to describe it with a language? Computation is intrinsically observer dependent, and defining the observer properties with computation would be circular?

Would it be fair to say that atleast for humans, we need a system that is consciousness first (and intelligent, though it need not be the other way around) that is also capable of computing to a certain extent?

Computation begets consciousness. Autonomy requires consciousness. It all starts from computation. Where does consciousness come from? It is a simulation of a model of the self. It's a simple theory that makes perfect sense.

It is not difficult to build an autonomous system without consciousness. Conversely, I don't see why removal of autonomy would end consciousness in a system.

Yes, but wouldn't you need the requirement for autonomy to develop a consciousness?

If autonomy is defined as a systems ability to formulate its own goals/objectives and act towards this goal, then I find it hard to dissociate the two as well. I would be interested in an example of autonomy without consciousness.

If your needs are not too specific, an agent will gave to set its own goals to satisfy them.

Satisfy its goals or my needs? If they are the same, then agent just found an optimal path to an end goal still fixed by me. Wondering if there is a difference b/w systems that formulate goals independent of us vs one that just badly deviate from our set goals due to poor design

Thinking out loud if the path to system autonomy is the existence of an overarching objective function with mutiple solutions, one which is also the solution to our goals or objective. If system is optimized for that func it has its own goal that may or may not align to ours.
