Would it be fair to say that atleast for humans, we need a system that is consciousness first (and intelligent, though it need not be the other way around) that is also capable of computing to a certain extent?
There are states in which you can no longer identify with the person owning the brain you run on. In a subset of those you won't be able to take a first person perspective at all (i.e. there is no I). Btw., most people know such states from dreams.

Clearly then, the phenomena of consciousness is a much broader than the notion of self. What are the characteristics of this non-self consciousness? Does this include at least reflective thought?
