On the train from the #HLAI2018 conference I had a fascinating convo with a physiotherapist. She pointed out how all human perception starts with proprioception, and if proprioception breaks down, we lose orientation in the world. @Numenta makes a similar point for AI.

I think you can in principle be an intelligent without a body, but in humans, our perception of the world is an extension of the body in space.
