I don't have experiences with 5-meo-DMT, but I don't see what's mysterious here? He describes a successive ego dissolution and derealization: modeling layers coming apart. Certainly impressive from the perspective of the self that experiences being dissolved!

I can't grasp the idea that a "simulation" is the answer to the nature of qualia. How do you know a simulation is capable of feeling anything? Why does blue feel the way it does? Sure, it's my brain telling a story, but why *that* particular quality and not some other?

If it could've been a huge range of different qualities and this particular one was best suited to our evo fitness, then what is the nature of the range of possible qualities?
