On the train from the #HLAI2018 conference I had a fascinating convo with a physiotherapist. She pointed out how all human perception starts with proprioception, and if proprioception breaks down, we lose orientation in the world. @Numenta makes a similar point for AI.

We can sense our bodies with our senses. I can see my hands, feel my feet, etc. But we model the location of every sensor patch in our cortex, and predict what sensations each patch will receive at every moment.

What you see is a model spanning from your visual cortex to your infero-temporal cortex. What you feel is a model originating in your somatosensory cortex. No sensations before that are available to you. (That is why you can also see and feel in your dreams.)
