On the train from the #HLAI2018 conference I had a fascinating convo with a physiotherapist. She pointed out how all human perception starts with proprioception, and if proprioception breaks down, we lose orientation in the world. @Numenta makes a similar point for AI.

I think you can in principle be an intelligent without a body, but in humans, our perception of the world is an extension of the body in space.

I was as a talk by Lisa Feldman Barrett where she pointed this out. It's similar to what I see as the first level of consciousness: self/body goals. We first need to model our own current state and goal state, before we compare it to other individual's current and goal states.

At the lowest level of my consciousness, I don’t perceive a body or a self. Also, goals are situations/events, and unlike needs they need to be constructed.

The modularity of software is the strongest limiter to AI. The human brain works because it’s one. AI works in modules which interface through API - there is no bandwidth for full feedback, no feedback from action back to perception. If our brain was modularized, we’d be dumb.

Technically, the brain is very modularized, but perhaps you are referring to the neocortex, which is mostly specialized?

So all human perception reduces to ... sensations arising in the body? :)

What about imagined sensation? That nightmare of falling continuously, lost, in a room full of non-interactive avatars ( people ).
