It is weird that we expect school children to understand only 50%–70% of a topic (like calculus) before we move on to one that builds on it. No computer game would have tutorial levels like that. It frustrates all progress.

The trick is to constantly reference back so that skill is exercised and the student continues to strengthen the connections to topics and techniques that they are relatively quickly introduced to

Typically the question is how to make a topic relevant to the student. Well adjusted brains learn all that is relevant to them and filter out the rest. Much of education seems to be about trying to game these filters.
