Descartes was such a troll: "it is absolutely true that we must believe that there is a God, because we are so taught in the Holy Scriptures, and, on the other hand, that we must believe the Holy Scriptures because they come from God" (Meditations, 1641)
I find it plausible that Descartes brackets his thoughts in nonsensically argued theism because he is acutely afraid of the inquisition. His claims do not actually make use of the God hypothesis, and he even states that God cold not create universes with laws different than ours.

Descartes uses the same theory of innate ideas to justify our beliefs in the laws of physics. All of our "clear and distinct" ideas are 'a priori' and a part of how our minds are structured. These ideas can't be deduced, we need them to be able to rationalize at all.
