Open society is part of our identity and dominant culture, and it is not automatically endorsed by everyone. Most cultures do not endorse liberalism, and if you want to keep it, liberalism has to be explicitly defended against totalitarian religions and ideologies.

There is disagreement whether our civilizational achievements result from the innate modernization and pacification tendencies of Christian culture or from the innovations of atheist revolutionaries, and they mostly focus on disagreements about the causes of modernist horrors.

I am not sure how such disagreements can be resolved, but it seems that both contemporary European Christianity and liberalist atheism are essentially pluralist and cooperative.
