Exactly the problem I think. If people were presented with math as logic first, instead of (now) useless arithmetic, a lot more would care. I’m not sure if Poincaré is talking about pedagogy here though..

I met quite a few people who had decided to permanently tune out mathematics as children when the teacher failed to answer their questions about why 2+2 equals 4, or why 0 by 1 equals 0. They would have needed intros to number theoy and group theory, but got authority instead.
