Interesting q. Anyone know? Does seem like a (biologically) costly design flaw.https://twitter.com/andrewshtulman/status/1030839493908029440 …

Psychologists make a big deal of the fact that we can’t tickle ourselves, citing it as evidence of specialized neural circuitry for differentiating expected sensations from unexpected ones, but why then can we masturbate?

Tickling is an adversarial sensory pattern where 1. it leaks from somatosensory origin domain 2. you cannot stabilize a predictive representation to filter and contain it. But if tickling was as pleasant as sex, most people would figure out how to tickle themselves.

Re your first points, can u articulate why that differs from sexual stimulation?

Sexual stimulation requires being in a specific mode of sexual arousal, and can then encompass a wide array of stimuli (touch, pressure, pain, smell etc.).

All true. But can’t our brains easily code for when physical stimulation is self generated and prevent the arousal/pleasure response that this adds?

It seems that for most people, the gratification from masturbation has a far lesser quality and lasts way shorter than the gratification from sex with another person.

True. But still (seems) to yield way more gratification than is evolutionary optimal, given lack of bio benefits, and wasted time+social sanctioning

The social sanctioning may be the evolved counter-response.

Could be. But other animals masturbate (eg your dog, if he ain’t neutered). And no social sanctioning there.
