The implication might be that either the prevention is too hard to evolve (how do you totally block gratification in the absence of a suitable physical partner when the individual is strongly motivated to circumvent the blocks?) or there are useful side-effects of masturbation?

Could be useful side effects (I haven’t seen any legitimately documented though, have you?) Could be prevention is too hard to evolve. That was my prior. But...tickling makes clear not hard to just prevent (any) pleasure from self-induced touching.

(Fact that we would REALLY want that pleasure seems moot. I also really want pleasure from eating. But if I am in a desert without food, the strong desire doesn’t allow me to get it from imagining food. My brain distinguishes food from imagined food.)
