How do you differentiate between the two? Both has the tendency to feel sorry for others' states and probably offer help in some way.

Empathy is the ability to perceive the mental states of others. (For strong empaths, it often supersedes their own states, so empathy tends to be very selective.) Compassion actually cares about mental states of others. Empathetic people can often be sadistic.
