The question whether we live in a holographic universe comes down to whether black holes are deforming space into funnels or into amphoras.
The information content of the universe is (more or less) inscribed on this surface. The size of the black hole funnel surface does not scale with the cube of the radius (like a planet well), but with the square (because the funnel is so thin).

That means that the information content of an arbitrary (even infinite) 3d volume of space can always be mapped on a 2d surface with the density of the information content of a black hole: this is the upper limit. Unless black holes are not funnels but amphora shapes.

My favorite shape.
