The deeper question is whether a liberal society has to ask its constituents for submission to liberalist principles.
Totalitarian states claim a monopoly on violence, too. The question is to which point a religious sub-group is allowed to impose law-like norms on its members that are more restrictive than the parent society, and to which degree they may even deviate (like animal rights).
