@IntuitMachine meant validity in the sense of "competitive". -
Personally, I am in the small camp that does not think quantum computers will ever outperform classic computers, but there are many other problems besides the recommender problem might be potentially used to demonstrate faster-than-classical quantum computation.

It doesn't invalidate quantum computing, it just questions if you have true speedups versus classical computing. What do you mean here by "unrelated"?

Quantum computing hints at a different kind of computation that is beyond classical computation. If classical computation is fundamentally causal in nature, then quantum computing is imply something that works beyond causality.
