I don’t think that it still works like this. I you see a search space with many expected optima, you are no longer free to pick the first one. I am sorry that my words sounds emotional to you. That was not intended. It is surprising that Einstein stopped looking for alternatives.

Surprising is also an emotional label regarding someone - Einstein - who’s full context and intent you have no insight to. And, while he may have stopped looking, others that followed kept looking...and that is indeed that nature of the scientific process.

He later reflected on some of these things himself. And the reason why most people never heard about Cartan’s theory might also have to do with Einstein‘s outsized influence (which does not diminish his accomplishments). I suspect you know all this and are just annoyed with me.
