It was all a conspiracy of freemasons, I thought? Which was driven by a mixture of enlightenment ideals, Machiavellianism, pragmatism, opportunism and personal sensibilities?

Well, it's a secret society, which means that you'd have to be a high ranking member and study their archives. But it is not a secret that Washington and crew were masons, and where all these obelisks and eye in pyramids came from.
