There are 0.5 percent vegans in the US. Google has removed eggs from the salad emoji for them, which seems to confirm @nntaleb's thesis that strong intolerance of minorities to something others are indifferent to is sufficient to change the rules for all.https://twitter.com/jenniferdaniel/status/1004427564679458816 …

There's big talk about inclusion and diversity at Google so if you need any evidence of Google is making this priority may I direct your attention to the 🥗 emoji— we've removed the egg in Android P beta 2, making this a more inclusive vegan salad. pic.twitter.com/kzHY0A9ZjG

What about the 5 percent of people with a sense for aesthetics who think that the visual composition of that salad looks pretty unbalanced now? At least add a slice of cucumber instead.

Yes, that is possibly missing from Taleb's argument: Attention to things that might cause offense is extremely selective. Scott Alexander had a post about this where he argues that it has to do with cost/benefit of selective policing. But I think it might be more about signaling.

I am totally fine with removing the egg and rearranging the tomatoes, but can I have that without the evangelism?

That may actually be the problem: for a lot of people, removing eggs from a salad emoji is inseparable from making a statement about a current political issue, and to require the audience to take a similar position.

Yes, the weird thing is that there are plenty of people that identify as vegan, but none that identify as not eating tomatoes. Veganism has a strong moral dimension, allergies mostly don't.

The definition of the emoji is “Green Salad”, and everyone else (except FB with cheese?) has only had veggies in it. So the new Google One is actually accurate. Is the vegan comment just signalling?pic.twitter.com/djfwMef8t7
