There are 0.5 percent vegans in the US. Google has removed eggs from the salad emoji for them, which seems to confirm @nntaleb's thesis that strong intolerance of minorities to something others are indifferent to is sufficient to change the rules for all.https://twitter.com/jenniferdaniel/status/1004427564679458816 …

There's big talk about inclusion and diversity at Google so if you need any evidence of Google is making this priority may I direct your attention to the 🥗 emoji— we've removed the egg in Android P beta 2, making this a more inclusive vegan salad. pic.twitter.com/kzHY0A9ZjG

What about the 5 percent of people with a sense for aesthetics who think that the visual composition of that salad looks pretty unbalanced now? At least add a slice of cucumber instead.

Yes, that is possibly missing from Taleb's argument: Attention to things that might cause offense is extremely selective. Scott Alexander had a post about this where he argues that it has to do with cost/benefit of selective policing. But I think it might be more about signaling.

Joscha, I just wrote a piece discussing the psychology and usefulness of veganism. I’d love to know your thoughts.https://medium.com/@trophictales/eating-for-a-better-world-384a33e19573 …

I am very sympathetic to these arguments. I don't share your humanist optimism about hunters being touched by the suffering of the animals they kill though (you can go to the dark, bloody internet abodes of the hunting community if you don't believe me).

I am pretty sure that Google would prefer if all politicization would stop and they could just write their code. Even the person who wrote the tweet immediately came to regret it and tried to correct it with the next tweet.

We went from concern about tyranny of the majority to tyranny of every single special interest group with more than 50 members in it without ever stopping at any point in between to consider whether or not those minority positions required or deserved government intervention.

Nah, not every single one. There is so much injustice going on in the world that we could scream all day long, but for some reason or other, the outrage du jour focuses only at a few and ignores all others.

950 million worldwide. Why would you promote a US-centered view to invalidate this decision?

Personally, I think the decision was valid and rational (just unfortunate to frame it as political).
