But perhaps it could become one.
I think that the universe is unlikely to be come a brain-like structure, not only because the incentives are absent, but because its energy sources (negentropy pockets) don't last long enough for information to travel back and forth over intergalactic distances for very often.
The universe is not a brain, but it has emergent properties that are similar to a brain (or a root structure, or many other natural phenomenons). Seeing this and finding common patterns is powerful and useful. AKA take the comparison seriously but not literally. ;)
The universe does not even look like a brain. The neocortex is 2D, just a few tens of neurons deep, and the similarity is an artifact of how many cells and which cell types you color, and where you crop the frame. The universe looks more like a polymerized sponge, for good reason
That makes sense. I suppose my interest in the images is more poetic and aesthetic than scientific, but your point is well taken. What's the good reason it looks like a polymerized sponge and where can I see such images?
Have a look at the blogpost I linked above! The reason is that polymerization works by combining a material that contracts in itself with a gas that expands and fills the gaps. In the universe, the contracting stuff is gravitating matter and the expanding gas is expanding space.
Cool! Will do. Coincidently just saw this video which is worth watching and very apropos of our back and forth. Sharing here to amplify the synchronicity... https://www.ted.com/talks/manuel_lima_a_visual_history_of_human_knowledge/ …
