Is there facial emotion recognition software that registers the actual emotions of people instead of responding to grimaces?

No, you cannot “recognize” emotions … you can only recognize facial expression.

My point was: Every perceptual feature is an imposition that does not capture ground truth itself, but latent variables in models over patterns that allow you to predict future patterns. These models may or may not correspond to ground truth.
